![]() ![]() ![]() According to anthropologists, abortion is found in virtually every society, going back at least 4,000 years. Abortion takes place in Canada and Greece and France, where it is legal, performed by medical professionals, and covered by national health insurance, and also in Kenya, Nicaragua, and the Philippines, where it is a crime and a woman who terminates a pregnancy takes her life in her hands. We need to talk about ending a pregnancy as a common, even normal, event in the reproductive lives of women-and not just modern American women either, but women throughout history and all over the world, from ancient Egypt to medieval Catholic Europe, from today's sprawling cities to rural villages barely touched by modern ideas about women's roles and rights. Not as something we all agree is a bad thing about which we shake our heads sadly and then debate its precise degree of badness, preening ourselves on our judiciousness and moral seriousness as we argue about this or that restriction on this or that kind of woman. I know, sometimes it seems as if we talk of little else, so perhaps I should say we need to talk about it differently. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() He only true belonging is the courage to stand alone and belong to ourselves. Because true belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world, our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance. Because this yearning is so primal, we often try to acquire it by fitting in and by seeking approval, which are not only hollow substitutes for belonging, but often barriers to it. When she asked what people are worried about and trying to achieve, it was the idea of belonging that was most important, with many yearning to “be part of something–to experience real connection with others–but not at the cost of their authenticity, freedom or power.”īelonging is the innate human desire to be part of something larger than us. So much of these characteristics are tied up in the concept of belonging. World-renowned researcher Brené Brown has spent years studying and interviewing people about the things that really matter: vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame. We yearn to belong, to fit in, to have a tribe and yet this most basic and profound desire is so often thwarted. Have you ever felt like you just don’t belong? Like you’re a pink chicken in a field of graceful giraffes, or that perhaps you came to the wrong planet? Certainly many people seem to feel this way, either about their families, or their community, their sexuality and culture. ![]() ![]() ![]() Bourdain stalked the screen, like a gaunt Joe Strummer, swearing like a longshoreman, occasionally actually drunk ![]() ![]() For all the rock’n’roll, the easy, sleazy charm, the guy wrote like a poet and, as he got older, he just got better. Not pretentious, not the purple passages of food writers before him, the high prose of the refined connoisseur but the terse, full-auto linguistic firepower of a New Yorker – imagery like crime-scene photos, the flayed raw humour of a morgue attendant, the sort of one-liners a hitman drops as he pulls the trigger, and similes that would make Raymond Chandler eat his own pencils. And when he was on form, Christ, could Bourdain weave words. Alone in the kitchen, a hangover and a double espresso from the still-warm La Marzocco machine, knocking up a scallion and chorizo omelette as you set up your station. For me it was a single passage that resonated most: the description of being the first guy on the line in the morning. It is said to have been rushed into print on the strength of the New Yorker piece, and some of it, in hindsight, feels like filler, but parts are inspired. It is more a collection of essays than a solid narrative. ![]() ![]() ![]() ^ "A Tale Dark & Grimm (TV Series 2021) - IMDb". ![]() Release Ī Tale Dark & Grimm premiered on October 8, 2021, globally on Netflix. The main aim of this paper is to contribute to a clarification of the issue in order to strengthen the foundations of the meaning and characterisation of risk, and in this way provide a basis for improved risk management. In this paper we carry out an in-depth analysis of what a black swan means in relation to risk, uncertainty and probability: is a black swan just an extreme event with a very low probability or is it a more surprising event in some sense, for example an unknown unknown? We question how the black swans are linked to the risk concep t, to expected values and probabilities, and to the common distinction between aleatory uncertainties and epistemic uncertainties. ![]() A key issue has been the ability of risk assessment and probability theory to capture the black swans. In recent years there has been much focus on the so-called black swans in relation to risk management and decision making under uncertainty. ![]() ![]() Abby, from book one, was tough as nails and sometimes mean.
